A Message from Andrea

We hope you are staying healthy and well during this challenging time. Both the pandemic and upheaval in our country have understandably impacted students in the Fostering Success Program. At the same time, our students are not new to experiencing turmoil in their lives and have also been very resilient during this difficult season. Thank you for your continued support and care during this very unique period.

The Fostering Success Program (FSP) continues to experience growth with a total of 259 students from foster care and other independent backgrounds at CSU, an increase of over 30 students from last academic year. Last week we sent 131 care packages to FSP students and one of our kind students wanted to make sure donors were thanked. She said the package, which contained snacks, toiletries, and encouraging note, etc. Truly made her day after having a couple of bad days.

Thanks for making an impact!

Andrea Fortney, FSP Coordinator

A Note from a Student

I want to thank you for supporting this fantastic program. The transition from high school to university was a daunting one. I am so thankful for the existence of my FSP community. While in this program, I’ve met lifelong friends at all of the events we’ve had. I’ve also had the opportunity to become a mentor and help other independent students navigate the jungle that is college life. Thank you for everything you do because it means the world to me and students like me. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for the difference you’ve make.

Best,

Shelby

Events

FSP continues to focus on building community among students from similar independent backgrounds. One of our virtual programs this fall also include FSP alumni. We featured a panel of established alums who were independent students sharing their stories and success adulting well. A dynamic discussion between FSP students and graduates followed. Our vision is to continue creating connection between FSP alumni and students.

Extra Extra! Read all about it! The Fostering Success Program is excited to announce that we are in the process of building a free lending Library just for our students. A lending Library is a free resource where our students can borrow or donate relevant books at any time. Currently we are working in collaboration with our students to put together a refreshingly well-rounded reading list, but we need YOUR help. Our mission is to provide our students the chance  to see diverse authors and stories on the shelves which may reflet their own experiences. These books are chosen with care in hopes of highlighting and give voice to our underrepresented student populations. Please feel free to help contribute by sponsoring the purchase of any books!
